Entry 01

This is the first of my daily quick CAD models, where I post pictures and walk through my thought process while designing parts. Each day will be something different and can vary from a simple bracket to a more complex part or assembly depending on what I happen to be working on.

All CAD models will be designed using Solidworks with any exceptions saying what software was used.

Hope you enjoy and if you would like any mechanical design help or to talk about anything you see, let me know!

July 5th, 2024 - Bottlecap

For my first model, I decided to model a simple bottle cap, theming it based on those used as currency in the Fallout videogame series.

Step 1

I started with creating 2 base sketches, with a 3D sketch to create the arches between the two. (I also forgot to disable the appearance when I took the screen capture). I then lofted the profiles together using the 3D sketch as guide curves.

Step 2

Once I lofted the profile, I proceeded to do a circular pattern, with 20x instances. This created the base ring of the bottlecap.

Step 3

Once the core ring was formed, I extruded the top of the cap to close it off.

Step 4

Once the core shape of the bottlecap was created, the final step in finishing the geometry was to fillet all the sharp edges and to create the smooth appearance.

Step 5

Material and appearances were then applied. For material, I went with 8011 Aluminum as it is seems to be the most common material used in industry. I followed this up with a dash of red gloss paint on the exterior faces.

Step 6

To finish off the bottlecap, I added the Nuka Cola logo to the top. Unfortunately I could not find a white version with decent enough resolution so black it is.
